At Saturn Films 1969 we provide high quality, high resolution scans and the vast mojority are supplied as jpeg images. This means that they are compressed and take up less room on your computer and storage devices. Typically the images are supplied at around 7-8mb each, though we include a tablet/websized set where the images are compressed to about 500kb. The larger images are for tv and pc viewing whilst the tablet sized are great on an ipad for example, or to share over the internet with friends and family.
Tiff images are uncompressed files and much larger. For example a single standard 35mm image at 4000dpi will be about 50 – 100mb. Obviously the files swallow disk space but they are great for precision editing and we scan projects as tif files before editing and saving as jpeg. So why on Earth would we do that ? The reason is that the edit on tif is precise affecting only the pixels we change. Making the change on a jpeg image may result in several pixels being changed and a possible visual smear on the final edited jpeg. Ultimately we are aiming to deliver the best quality from the image.
